Aweber, created by Tom Kulzer in 1992 to make email marketing simpler for business, now hosts more than 100,000 small businesses and entrepreneurs alike. It provides you with more than 700 templates free images, autoresponders just like any other platform out there, and a whole lot more.
Mailchimp, the baby product of Dan Kurzius and Ben Chestnut, came to be in 2001. Although it did not aim to be the giant that it is today, it has grown dramatically and now has more than 16 million users.
This email marketing platform offers advanced analytics, templates for emails, and of course autoresponders.
In terms of their functionality and the service they provide, they seem a lot like twin brothers who might be different people but with the same look. However, once you get into email marketing you will start to discover that they are far from being similar, and offer a wide range of different services.
So, let us discuss which one might fit your business needs better than the other since it is impossible to say one is bad and the other is good. The only thing is which one has more potential for you?
Ease of use
Mailchimp vs Aweber both are easy to start if you were to compare them to other platforms in the industry, however, when paired against one another Mailchimp gets the point.
Because Mailchimp has very easy to understand landing page, plus it is simple to navigate through the site to find something if you are looking for.
It also organizes everything in a rational model. For example, the first tab on the menu is campaigns which is something that most email marketers would understand since you call it campaign rather than anything else.
Aweber hides it through the messages, which makes it seem like it is part of your messaging tab rather than a whole another tab with its own functions.
Mailchimp also does a good job of making sure you do not skip any stem setting up your accounts, emails or automation. It is very useful for beginners and experts alike, as sometimes you might forget to put in your signature or a link you are sending.

Design and functionality
Most people online would suggest you make your emails simple and straight. It is therefore important to have the right template that delivers whatever you intend.
Mailchimp has about 80 clean and glossy templates. There are sections that determine which business it was meant for such as eCommerce, or holidays/events, etc.
The sections are very useful in searching for that right template faster. Also, you can even customize the templates to your needs and wants, such as the font sizes, colours, pictures.
Although the customization is not as good as perhaps the apps that meant to do it, it still saves you a lot of time from making it elsewhere and bringing back to the system.
The possibility to create it with HTML or to code is the best function of the templates. Of course, if you are not a coder, you might find this feature useless. But it just means how much attention they have paid to their templates.
Aweber does have 150 templates which are almost double the number of templates Mailchimp has. However, they are not always better. It depends on what you look. For example, in terms of design, there is no arguing who has better. For it is still very much subjective.
But if the industry standard for say sales was red and black, then you would find those standard colouring and designs. This is just a hypothetical theory, if you are in eCommerce and looking to construct your email marketing doesn’t go for red and black. Although who knows maybe they will do just fine 😉
Layouts of the templates seem a bit limited, for example, it is rare you find 2-3 columned templates. Although the customization feature that existed with Mailchimp still exist with them too, which means you would be able to tweak to your side.
However, they lack codability, like we mentioned it is not a requirement by many of the email marketers. However, even if you are not a coder, but you need to make a change in the coding you could still hire someone to do it.
But with the templates from Aweber, you will be better off hiring a designer to design the templates all together than to change in the coding. Mention that the design comes from Aweber. Itself as a paid service and not from Fiverr, etc.
So here we give the point to Mailchimp again, but it depends which you prefer, quantity or quality.
Aweber email automations are for some reasons called campaigns for which we took a point away from them already, However, if you are a type of person who likes to keep it simple, this should be your go-to platform.
It is far easier to set up your automations. You can also create a different types of automations, although the variety is less than with Mailchimp. It is still possible to automate a message to your new subscribers or people who bought a certain product.
With Mailchimp, the degree you can launch campaigns goes a lot deeper than just a welcome message being sent out. For example, you could set up a campaign for subscribers who are interested in one side of your business more than the other side.
It is also possible to create another campaign for those who opened the link but did not make the purchase or campaign for those who just visited the website.
Because it features many functionalities in terms of automations setting them up could take a while, perhaps may require you to look through your data more carefully and with an eye for details.
Since it is easier to set up campaigns with Aweber, it might be a fit product for those who are just starting and do not need to segment their customer base down to a notch.
Even though this is a comparison between the two platforms, this side of email marketing is better handled by other platforms, like GetResponse.

The part it excels at is that it allows you to embed images or videos to your forms. Now, the times for those shiny and glistening spammy emails might be over since the whole world is caught now and knows what shines like gold is not always gold.
However, you could put these features into good use with a bit of creativity. After all, it is always better to have more options to deal with than less and cope.
Performance reporting/ spam testing
Any data that relates to how well your emails are doing is very important to get the right feedback to work with. That is why how much data you get back form either of the platforms matters a lot.
MailChimp offers integration with Google Analytics. For that only the point goes to Mailchimp. However, Aweber does not lack too far behind. It has all the metric features that Mailchimp has.
For example, if you can find out about the bounce rate, or click-through rate, with Mailchimp you can definitely find those out with Aweber too.
When email marketing it is very important to check how many people it reached and how many reacted to it, and if reacted in what ways. Luckily both platforms offer stats on these records.
Mailchimp though goes a step further and can give you data on geo-locations as well. This, in fact, is another important factor in these global economies.
When it comes to spam testing it is quite surprising to see neither of the platforms offers that. Because this is very important now than ever before to check if your email is going to be put in the spam or not.
There are countless marketers out there who send emails without testing for spam and get very little efficiency and productivity back from that if any.
It is also important to check how your emails are going to look at different devices, like mobile, or tablets. Again, surprisingly neither of the platforms offer any of that. Except with Mailchimp, you could install a third-party extension that lets you do that, but it is not free.
At this point, it would be logical to talk about deliverability of both platforms and how well they do it. Since a lot depends on that not just the platform, we will give you caution and leave it at that, and ask you to spam test every time before you send out emails if you decide to go with either of the platforms.
Now pricing is very important, it is so important you might even be surprised why we did not talk about it in the beginning, well, we just wanted to save the best part for the last. However, those things above are as significant as the price.

Both have free options to a certain degree. With Aweber, you get a month off after which their least expansive plan is $19 a month. The free month opens all the options the site has, however, once the month finishes you will have to buy it or leave.
Monthly plans apart from the $19 starter one are: $29 up to 2,500 subscribers. $49 up to 5,000 $149 up to 25,000 subscribers.
Mailchimp, on the other hand, has a free plan only up to 2000 contacts. Small may it seem, that is quite the number for someone who is just starting. The best part is that it does not have any time limit.
It also has 10,000 sends limit, with this free plan. But this is nothing to worry about unless you plan to send 10 emails per day, per user. If not then it is pretty much enough to get started.
After you reach 2000 email subscribers the pricing changes. But even if it changes, it changes positively. They have this pay as you go feature which means you will be paying for the number of subscribers you own.
For example, if you were to hit 5000 subscribers, then you would be paying $50 a month which seems like a lot, but you will pay as you go, so it is not going to happen overnight.
In this section, we are not going to talk about how popular the platforms are since you probably already know that. But we are going to talk about what is popular with which. It is something that will need to identify which one of the platforms better suits your needs.
Now Mailchimp has a lot of restrictions when it comes to writing emails: they are very much against affiliate marketing and anything that has to do with making money online.
If you happen to be in a category where you will need to even mention any keywords relating to those. You will immediately get banned.
Affiliate marketing is like their kryptonite. Anyone that comes close, shall be removed. It is easy to understand why this policy. As affiliate marketing as a whole brought various different types of personalities who might have abused the system in the past.
The business model itself is not bad, it is the people who took advantage that they wish to keep away from.
Even though MailChimp as a platform is not affiliate-friendly, they have their own affiliate program, ironic it may seem it is useful, and easier to promote the platform this way.
On the other hand, Aweber is affiliate friendly. In fact, they have their own affiliate system. If you were to buy their monthly subscription and send the link to your friend or someone else who will also purchase a monthly subscription. They will get 20% off, and you will get a certain percentage of that commission, for as long as they are a member.
It would be easy to say Mailchimp wins this review battle. However, Aweber does not make it easy and puts up a good fight.
There are pros and cons to both of them, and these two are in fact the biggest email marketing platform out there today. When it comes to making a decision though, you want first look inside and find out what you need. For example, if you were in affiliate marketing no matter how good the Mailchimp might sound, you could never work with them.
However, if you just happen to be any other business and need something with detail analytics or integration to google analytics, and some good quality templates for every kind of email, and general ease of use, then Mailchimp should be your choice.
